Community Foundation of West Texas Kicks-Off Giving Tuesday Fundraiser With the Help of United Supermarkets

LUBBOCK, Texas – We give thanks on Thanksgiving, go to the mall on Black Friday, and browse the web on Cyber Monday. Now, we have a day dedicated to giving back and making West Texas a better place:  Giving Tuesday.

Giving Tuesday (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving – this year on December 1st), harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners—nonprofits, businesses, corporations and media as well as families and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

The Community Foundation of West Texas coordinates the Giving Tuesday movement for the South Plains. “The Community Foundation of West Texas believes that charitable giving should be easy, flexible and effective,” stated Michelle Tosi-Stephens, Vice President for the Community Foundation of West Texas. Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for the community to come together and have more impact with those participating in the campaign.

In 2015, Lubbock nonprofit Alström Angels brought the movement to Lubbock.  Executive Director Cassie Johnston states, “when we saw other cities around the world participate in Giving Tuesday, I knew we had to bring that spirit of giving to Lubbock and our surrounding communities.”  #GivingTuesdayWTX, inspires people to take collaborative action to improve our local community, give back to causes they celebrate, and help create a better world.”

Fifty-three nonprofits have joined the 2020 #GivingTuesdayWTX campaign and have set a collective goal to raise $250,000 on December 1, 2020  “There is strength in numbers,” Stephens stated, “and when we work together, extraordinary things will happen.  As the year 2020 has been difficult for so many, it seems very fitting to support Giving Tuesday now more than ever.

United Supermarkets, Amigos, and Market Street will be partnering with the Community Foundation of West Texas to raise general funds for the Non-Profits participating in Giving Tuesday. The stores will kick-off a register campaign starting on Friday, November 27. This will give guests the opportunity to support the Lubbock community when shopping. To donate, simply add a donation of any amount to your purchase at the register for Giving Tuesday. You can also add a donation while online shopping with StreetSide. The register campaign will run from November 27 through December 6, spreading out the love of Giving Tuesday.

“We are happy to join the Community Foundation of West Texas for this initiative again this year. West Texans are very generous, and it’s our pleasure to give them an easy way to participate in Giving Tuesday by donating as they check out,” said Nancy Sharp, with the United Family. “COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of many of our neighbors, generating tremendous need. We stand alongside these community partners to contribute our funds and to give our guests an opportunity to do the same.”
