United Supermarkets to Open its 2nd
Amigos United Location Nov. 7

(LUBBOCK) - United Supermarkets will cut the ribbon on its second Amigos United store during a 9 a.m. ceremony Nov. 7 at its 112 N. University location.

Amigos United   The opening comes slightly more than a year after the company launched its Amigos brand at its North Columbia location in Plainview. The Lubbock store has  operated as a traditional United Supermarkets since it opened in December 1995.

The store has undergone a complete reset to make room for several new features.“We have tried to consider our guests’ shopping patterns and how they will spend their time in the store,” said Sidney Hopper, chief operations officer for the Amigos-United Division. “It is designed to create a shopping experience unlike any other.”

The Plainview store provided an opportunity to adjust and improve the Amigos experience, Hopper said. For example, the Lubbock store will feature an open-air dining area, an expanded pharmacy and new menu items such as gorditos, fresh mole and tripitos. The store will include a tortilla machine that will make fresh corn and flour tortillas daily.

“The pharmacy will have two windows for drop-off points,” Hopper said. “It will be a new facility with more windows which will allow us to better serve our guests.” Other expanded food offerings include value meals to make it easy for guests to see and order available options; a “Hot at Five Project,” giving guests a chance to purchase from several selections of fresh bread each day at 5 p.m.; and a “liquado” stand, where about a dozen flavors of made-from-scratch fruit cocktails (“aguas frescas”) will be served.

Store Director Adrian Jimenez said the store’s new look will emphasize simplicity and ease of access.

“We are focusing a lot on that,” he said. “There will be plenty of things in the store for guests to sample and to make sure they have a unique, relaxing experience. We are concentrating on a family-oriented theme.”

Jimenez added the store will be geared to blend into a rapidly changing area of town that includes a diverse population, Texas Tech University, the Overton redevelopment project and a soon-to-be-completed major freeway.

“This store will be a positive thing for the community,” he said. “The store and the team members who work here will continue to be involved in the community, and it will be a benefit to the new housing and development.”

The Friday ribbon cutting kicks off a weekend of festivities looking to bring families and the neighborhood together for three days of fun. Other activities include an all-day tailgate party Saturday, featuring free T-shirts, footballs and balloons, along with the broadcast of the Texas Tech-Oklahoma State football game on a giant 9x12-foot screen; and a neighborhood party Sunday from 1-6 p.m., featuring games, giveaways and a live concert by Tejano star Shelly Lares.

All activities are free of charge.
