Area United Ways Benefit from
18 Annual Jacky Pierce Charity Classic

LUBBOCK, Texas (special) - United Supermarkets’ 2009 Jacky Pierce Charity Classic golf tournament, held Aug. 30-31 at Lubbock Country Club, raised more than $130,000 for the United Way organizations which serve the United Supermarkets trade area.

Proceeds to those organizations were presented during a special ceremony between the morning and afternoon flights on Aug. 31. Fourteen United Way organizations benefited from the 18th annual golf tournament, and monies were awarded on a percentage basis according to store sales in the region served by each United Way.

The breakdown of money presented to United Ways in each United Supermarket trade area is:

More than 350 team members, partners and guests participated in the tournament, which has now raised more than $2 million for charities since its inception in 1991. It is named in honor of United Supermarkets’ longtime produce director, Jacky Pierce, who guided the event from its infancy until losing a lengthy battle with cancer in August 2002. The tournament was renamed to honor his memory in 2003.
