Charity Golf Tournament to Benefit
Area Children's Medical Centers

LUBBOCK, Texas (special) –Six Children's Miracle Network Hospitals within United Supermarkets' trade area will be the beneficiaries of funds raised during the company's 2008 Jacky Pierce Charity Classic golf tournament.

The 17th annual event is slated for Monday, Sept. 15, at Bear Creek Golf Course, near DFW Airport. The four-man scramble is slated for a 1 p.m. start.

Beneficiaries include Hendrick Medical Center, Abilene; Baptist St. Anthony's Health System, Amarillo; Children's Medical Center, Dallas; Cook Children's Medical Center, Fort Worth; UMC Children's Hospital, Lubbock; and United Regional Health Care System, Wichita Falls.

This year's tournament features LPGA Tour pro Brittany Lang, a native of McKinney. Lang will conduct a golf clinic for tournament attendees at 10:30 a.m. Currently in her third season as a tour pro, Lang has earned almost $400,000 with three top-10 finishes this year, including a tie for second at the Sybase Classic in May.

Market Street, United Supermarkets' specialty store, is one of Lang's official sponsors.

This is the first year in the history of the tournament that proceeds will go to Children's Miracle Network (CMN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children's hospitals across North America. Each year, the 170 Children's Miracle Network hospitals provide the finest medical care, life-saving research and preventive education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries of every kind.

Since 1991, United Supermarkets and its vendor partners have gathered annually for a day of fun, fellowship and golf, while raising money for nonprofit organizations. The tournament has now raised almost $2 million for charities since its inception in 1991. It is named in honor of United Supermarkets' longtime produce director, Jacky Pierce, who guided the event from its infancy until losing a lengthy battle with cancer in August 2002. The tournament was renamed to honor his memory in 2003.
